You Don't Need A Puppy House Training Book

Stacy Davenport

Yesterday we went to the pet store to find a book on puppy house training. We found all kinds of books on different types of dogs but not a single book on just house training your puppy. Photo books abound the shelves but nothing that met our needs so once back home I began a search online for information. Now I know why I didn't find any potty training books.

Simon Cowell of American Idol is a Dog Advocate against abuse of dogs and lends his support to many online education sites. On one site I found this information that none of the paperbacks had to offer.

"You have just learned that your new puppy will need to go to the bathroom every two to three hours, or, every time it wakes up from a nap. You also know that you need to go to work on Monday morning and you will not be back for eight hours. If you leave your puppy in the crate it will have gone to the bathroom twice before you get home. Yikes! It will have spent half of the day laying in urine and may start to eat its own feces. Clearly, you have some serious choices to make."

This one statement made us step back and rethink our decision to jump in and get a pair of boxer dogs. What do we know about the breed and how easy they are to train?

The information provided help with everyday problems like well - puppies and house training and toy breeds so you don't have to worry about getting advice for a large dog when you own a small one. If you look a bit deeper online you can be very specific about breed like house training Yorkie and get a great site with a everything from obedience to crate training. So now we couldn't decide since both breeds are very cute and very different.

So here are 5 quick things to think about or research before you by a puppy or even a book.

1. Do a quick online search of dog pictures

2. Make a list of what kind of dog you would like. You may be buying a puppy but in the end you have a dog. So be honest to you want a yappy dog, a small guard dog, a lap dog, or a companion dog. Be truthful about how much time you have to spend with your dog as some dogs are more in dependant than others.

3. Read about each breed. See which ones match up with your expectations. I used a check list

4. Find out how easy they are to potty train, how much exercise they require, health problems and grooming.

5. Finally online you will find books, videos and just about every accessory you can think of for your chosen breed. Now you are ready to phone or contact some of the breeders on line and find out what they have to say. While most these puppies are more expensive than we could afford we found out what breed we really wanted so we found a local breeder to buy two litter mates from.

Finally, let me tell you two puppies are harder to train than one even though many people told us that they learned from one another. Remember that includes bad habits too! Did we find the right pooch? Yes we did and we didn't need any of the picture books at the local book store.

The age old question of how do I potty train my puppy become for us Help! How do I train my puppies. It's important to remember that dogs like humans have personalities and like my husband and I are pets each have one of us they prefer and seem to enjoy. That it was made puppy house training simple for us. We each trained our own dog rather than trying to housebreak them together!
